Now that the worst of the snow is finally melting in Derbyshire, we can turn our attentions fully to Christmas time and the treats in store over then next couple of weeks.
Our Christmas baking has been in full swing for a couple of weeks now and residents of Crich will have been tempted by the spicy smell of freshly baked mince pies wafting out of the bakery. As usual, all our mince pies are made by hand using our home-made mincemeat which is a family recipe and an all-butter pastry. They are sooo tempting when still cooling from the oven, so get in around mid-morning and enjoy one or two with a nice cup of loaf coffee!
I have also been trying my hand at some continental Christmas goodies. German spiced lebkuchen (gingery biscuits) made using Derbyshire honey, cut in a variety of shapes and decorated with candied fruit, nuts and chocolate are available as lovely stocking fillers.
Also, today I have baked some more of the lovely 'Istanbul Meringues' which we had on the stand at the recent Fabulous Places Christmas Market. To go along with these, I have made some date macaroons and some chewy almond lebkuchen, both coated with chocolate! Resist if you can!
On the bread side, as well as our normal range of breads, we have apricot or apricot and walnut sourdoughs available and a re-appearance of the popular cranberry, oat and apple bread. These breads can be ordered using the Christmas Order Form for Christmas week and also for New Year's Eve. Either print-off the form or pick up a hard copy at either shop and fill it in by Tuesday 21 December to ensure you get your choice of bread for the festive period. You can also use the form to order mince pies and Christmas cakes. If you would like to order any cheeses or pâtés, just speak to a member of staff over the next week.
Christmas opening times
We are open until 2pm on 24 December and then closed until Thursday 30 and Friday 31 which will be normal days both in Crich and Matlock. We are then closed again until Tuesday 4 January 2011 when business will resume as normal. Pizza nights start again on Wednesday 12 January.
Last chance to vote for us...
Closing date tonight, 10 December!
You may have seen the Daily Telegraph's Best Small Shop competition. Some of our customers have been very kind to nominate us in the 'Best for Food' category. If you happen to agree and want to put a vote our way, you can do so on the Daily Telegraph website .
Finally, all that remains is for me to wish you a very enjoyable Christmas and a prosperous 2011. We thank you for your custom and support during 2010 and look forward to welcoming you to the loaf in both Crich and Matlock in the New Year.
Andrew and Rog
